IN TRIBUTE TO SANIBEL ISLAND
On October 26, 2003 my husband, our two dogs and I crossed the causeway to Sanibel Island. Why?? We were drawn by the Sanibel Lighthouse, or as the locals call it the Point Ybel Light. In 1833 the lighthouse was requested but it took 50 years for the government to respond. The 104 foot tower with a third order Fresnel lens went into service finally in 1884. In 1949 the lighthouse was automated. There are many causeways in Florida—Much like the floating bridges of Washington, close to the water. On a clear day you can see forever. You can watch pelicans and dolphin or just “Enjoy Our Good Nature”, as the sign says. You can get your first view of the lighthouse surrounded by Australian Pines and other trees.

Well, that was the sight prior to Hurricane Charley. It has taken over a week to clear the roadways of downed trees. Those trees left standing now pose a serious safety hazard as they are leaning and broken. I cannot imagine what it was like to live on Sanibel Island and to hear a hurricane coming and know you must leave by the causeway—You must leave everything. On August 14, 2004, re-entry to the island was prohibited.

On the 21st of August only 1/3 of the power is restored. I had the privilege of seeing the light before Charley and wish to share that with you. Please enjoy these designs, stitch them in memory of the 21 who lost their lives to Charley to date. When you dust, turn on your sewing machine or pull a weed, stop and imagine life after a hurricane- no dust, it has become thick mud, no power or word of when it will be restored, and the weeds invisible, covered by sand and debris.
