River outlets generate shifting sand bars and reefs that endanger ships daily. To mark these spots lighthouses are built. Thus is the case with St. Johns River. But when the bar changed the lighthouse was replaced by a lightship. When the US Navy developed the Air Base 20 feet of the 81 foot tall lighthouse was buried to make the runway level. Entrance to the light is now through a window. The design reflects this buried 20 feet.
