So how is it that lighthouses are called range lights??? There's no stove, no buffalo roam--So why range?? The answer is simple. As you "Sail" along you must keep the two lights lined up perfectly-one atop the other-so you know you are straight in the channel. When these range lights are buildings and not a lighthouse and a buoy they are referred to as front and rear. They may be 1/2 mile apart and usually the rear light is taller or built on a hill side. Often the keeper lived in the rear range light.
