Hi. I’m Debbie of Too
Cute Embroidery. I have lived in Sacramento, California my entire
life. I have been blessed with a wonderful family, my husband of 27
years, Charlie, and my children, Sarah, 26 and Christopher, 24.
I am incredibly proud of the children I’ve raised – in the people
that they are.
My mom became disabled from RA when I was a young teen and this left
no time for creative pursuits. I had four younger sisters, the
youngest only 4. Before long there were kids, caring for mom,
working, and a home to run, still no time for creative
pursuits…….the years passed and the kids grew and I lost my mom
which freed up my responsibilities. In memory of my mom, I wanted to
do something to help others so I took a quilting class. I started
making quilts for cancer patients to let them know they were cared
about. Having witnessed my mom wheelchair bound and unable to use
her hands, I know how isolated one can be. I remember how a home
health nurse, Ellen, who came to check on our care of mom touched
her heart. She talked with mom, really talked to her like a person
(it’s a small thing but you’d be surprised) and befriended her. My
mom just lit up. She looked forward to Ellen coming over and was
very sad when she had to move away. Over the years I have sewn
quilts for soldiers injured in Iraq, quilt blocks and quilts for
9/11 victims families, quilts for cancer patients, hundreds of chemo
caps for chemo centers, quilts for children in need, mastectomy
comfort pillows, toys and beds for animal shelters, and anyone I
hear of in need of a special hug. I feel as though I honor my mom
with every item I make and give to another person. While my
situation has changed, I’m forever changed by this life experience.
I give my best, my most beautiful creations to really touch their
hearts that someone made them something so special. My goal
originally was to make and donate 100 quilts, but I’ve already
surpassed that in ten tears so I am thinking I need to raise the bar
to 500.
I have been quilting for the last 15 years and love it. It was
actually my quilting friends who pulled me into embroidery. I was
happily quilting away while my friends were buying embroidery
machines and telling me how much I needed one…..I tried to fend them
off for a while but then gave in and purchased one of their
machines, a Bernina 180e, that I still have. I fell in love with it.
After a while I wanted to try digitizing, to see what it was all
about. I asked a friend to show me how, thinking I’d pick it up in a
few days! Silly me – I think it was a year before I really had a
good sense of the dynamics and could produce a quality design I
would sell. That was six years ago and I still have so much to
learn. There are so many techniques and areas to explore. I enjoy
learning and growing things. In the next five years I hope to create
many in the hoop designs, quilt designs, and make a name for myself
in the embroidery/crafting world, but we’ll see what happens. My
dream would be to make lots of $, purchase a compound to have
stitching retreats and my buddies and I sew, and of course have a
small fabric store there. Whether that ever turns out, I am a happy
woman who’s very blessed and has a lot of gratitude for my life.
