Welcome
friend! I’m Debbie Hicks of Too Cute Embroidery and I have lived
in Sacramento, California for all my 50 years.
I find balance in my life through creativity.
Having raised two amazing children into adults, I began
my journey first with quilting which led me to connecting with
other creative women, and one adventure after another.
I enjoy quilting and sewing purses and handbags, gifts
and other goodies for family and friends.
I love to learn and continue to learn every day.
I enjoy teaching beginning sewing for adults and
children, quilting and purse making classes at a local quilt
shop. It’s just magic – my enthusiam is contagious. To see the
spark in a new stitcher’s eyes just fills my heart. I enjoy it
tremendously.
It’s
a huge blessing to be a part of that energy and environment.
I began digitizing in 2000. My friends had been twisting my arm
to get into embroidery with them but I could only resist so
long!
I purchased a
friend’s Bernina 180 when she upgraded to the newest model and
fell in love. It thrills me to watch my designs stitch out, like
my children, as they come to life.
Being a creative gal first, it’s very important to me to
create designs and projects that you’ll enjoy stitching without
frustration and make you look good!
I also have done a lot of community service
“work”, making quilts for cancer patients, impoverished and sick
children, animal shelters, quilts for soldiers injured in Iraq,
clothing for children living in poverty, items for mastectomy
patients and
even the 9
1 1 quilt.
I think
the most important was a memory quilt for my daughter’s best
friend from high school. This beautiful girl died at 15 from
cancer. She didn’t tell anyone she had it. Our girls were on a
high school dance team with 40 other girls.
I took all of her
competition t-shirts and items of her clothing and made a
special quilt for her mom and finished it by tying it with
Aubrey’s hair ribbons. I loved Aubrey and it gave me great joy
to create a treasured keepsake for her mom. I consider it
sending love out into the world –it’s important to give back and
let others know they’re cared about and not alone. Anything is
easier to go through when you don’t feel alone. I’ve made and
donated over 100 quilts myself. I would encourage everyone to
create something absolutely beautiful out of pure love and give
it to someone in need of a hug.
Sometimes folks think of “charity” one step better than
throwing something away
which is very sad. To a poor child, receiving something
“not good enough for someone else” sends them another
disappointment and negative message that they’re less than.
I would encourage everyone to use your most beautiful
fabric and your most beautiful work to create something amazing.
I live in a modest home and live modestly
but I am incredibly blessed with the family and friends that I
have in my life. I am very grateful for them. I spend all the
time I can with my grandson Arlen (3) and niece Katrina (7) who
was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes this year. This leads me to
a new adventure – creating items to help identify children with
medical concerns, keep them safe, and help raise funds for
families to attend diabetes camp and learn how to keep their
kids happy and healthy and get support for parents who are
terrified and feel the weight of the world on them. I was lucky
enough to go last year and learned so much. It was an incredible
experience – the support and encouragement for these little
heroes and the love of their families.
So it’s a juggling act in my life like so
many others.
I hope
to do this full time one day and play all day long.
We’ll see what happens.
I thank you for your visit and hope that you will
continue to visit and see where this creative adventure leads.
Happy Stitching!
Debbie
