Stitching On Mulberry Paper
by Ursula Lamb of Inspiration Mutz

What is mulberry paper?

Mulberry Paper originates from the Mulberry Tree. It is hand crafted, soft and feather-like to the touch. An amazing fact is how much stitching the paper can withstand – however – you will notice lots of tiny holes on your stitch out, when you hold it against the light. As you can see this floral design is quite dense – and yet no issues with the paper.

To stitch on Mulberry paper is easy, really. After testing various ways of hooping I came to the conclusion that the “paper frame technique” works best. Just hoop a piece of heavy duty stabilizer, mark in such a way that you have a 4x4 /10x10cm square after cutting out the center. The big advantage is that you can use this frame over and over again. If you plan to do a series of greeting cards there is no need to hoop new every time – just “stick" it on with spray adhesive.
Spray on all 4 sides of the square and cut a piece of mulberry paper, place on top, press down firm so it stays in place and fix the hoop to the machine.

Stitch out design completely – if you like to stitch out text also, proceed in the same manner by removing the main stitch out and adhere another piece of mulberry paper into your paper frame. This is an ideal way to use up paper off-cuts.

You now have 2 components, the design and the lettering. You can, of course, just cut all the way around close to the stitched outline – but I love this “fringed” finish rather which is achieved by wetting the area around the stitched border and pulling out pieces of the paper. Thanks to it’s nature you will have a pretty, rather rustic (parchment) look.

All that is left for you to do now is to prepare a suitable size of card stock which can be embellished first by cutting fancy edges, using glitter, or glitter glue, gold and silver pens, or stickers to enhance a certain theme. Then glue your mulberry stitch outs onto the card stock – and now you have your very own self-crafted greeting card done!

Ursula lives in Cape Town, South Africa.

She loved sewing and knitting from an early age. But when she was introduced to machine embroidery she entered a whole new fascinating world. It took not long to  find out that this was what she wanted for her future. Inspiration Mutz was founded in July 2005. Over time Ursula tested her preferences for creating embroidery designs in various ways which she enjoys a lot but her favorite techniques lay in working with Organza and Tulle in combination with FSL. She also loves to create appliqué designs and is always ready to try something in addition: re: Stitching on Mulberry Paper
