There were many beautiful entries in the contest, it
was very hard to choose the winners for the OPW's
first Quilt-A-Thon. Below are the judges' choices of
the quilts using the 2010's quilt block series.
We've already begun 2011's quilt block patterns and
quilting lessons give-a-way, so grab your fabric and
thread, start stitchin' and show us your stuff using
the new blocks available.
MOST
IMAGINATIVE QUILT by Barbara Rosenbush
Why
this quilt won: I like the
way she tied the nursery rhyme
designs in with the text in the
border. The colors work well for boy
or girl. It is bright and cheery,
perfect for a nursery!

Attached are pictures of my entry in
the Quilt-a-Thon contest. It is a 37
inch square baby quilt. The designs
are by
Bunncup Embroidery
called
Nursery Rhymes.
FAVORITE
QUILT by Betty Hornbuckle
Why
this quilt won: If I were
to make an embroidered quilt with my
favorite colors, shapes and designs,
THIS would be it. I love the soft
colors and airy feeling of this
quilt.
Betty said: I am attaching
some pictures of the quilt that I
made for your First Annual
Quilt-A-Thon. I did the quilt in
sunshine yellow but my pictures
don't look that sunny. Living in the
Chicago area where the temperatures
currently are hovering below 20
degrees and there is lot of snow on
the ground, I decided to get bright
sunshine yellow fabric along with a
green polk a dot fabric and a print
with tiny purple flowers on a yellow
background. The embroidery in the
center of the large blocks is a
design from Cathy Park in Australia
and the mylar embroidered dragon
flies are from Hatched
in Africa. I
quilted the quilt on my mid arm
machine which I haven't had very
long so I'm still an amateur quilter
but I put some butterflies in the
sashing and some leaves on vines.
The quilt was fun to make and I
have worked on it diligently for the
past 2 weeks and now it is
completed. Thanks for the challenge!
BEST USE OF EMBROIDERY by Ellen
Lewis
Why
this quilt won: Ellen
combined the quilt block fabrics and
the appliqued embroidery designs to
perfection. The stitching is perfect
and pleasing to look at. The quilt
is very cute and colorful and shows
off the applique designs
beautifully.

my entry for the 1st quilt a thon
What fun! I have decided to call my
creation "Every Crayon in Box
Represented" As you will see by the
photos the alternate name could have
been Spring has Sprung. I used
Birds Of A Feather
from
Designs by JuJu
and they stiched out beautifully.
Thank you for the great patterns.
Regards, Ellen Lewis
BEST USE OF COLOR by Donna
Huckenpoehler
Why
this quilt won: The blending of the
blues and tans of the quilt
fabric is excellent. Donna
added enough light fabric in
the center to offset the
light backgrounds of the
embroidered blocks in the
border. It is well
balanced and very attractive.
Donna said: Here is
my quilt. I made 3 3/4 inch blocks
with the nine patterns. I reduced
the 5x7 embroidered designs to about
2x3 designs for the border blocks.
The finished quilt is 31x 31.
